For Art Licks Weekend 2019: Interdependence, Caraboo Projects planned to embark on a 160 mile journey on foot from their base in Bristol, to Standpoint Gallery.

The group was to be accompanied by a wagon, collectively built by the community of artists who make up Caraboo. Together the artists planned to journey, sharing the weight, testing and progressing their interdependence. A record of encounters, exchanges and observations made on the journey was due to be presented at Standpoint gallery. We intended to trace historic trade routes and acknowledge their complex past, whilst exploring how we can create supportive networks and infrastructures given the political climate at the time.

The group was due to depart from Bristol on Thursday 10th October, and arrive at Standpoint Gallery on Wednesday 16th October. Anyone was welcome to join the group as they traversed the canal paths, with overnight stops in Bradford-on-Avon, Pewsey, Newbury, Henley-on-Thames, Old Windsor and Kingston-upon-Thames.

A public event was planned at Standpoint Gallery on Saturday 19th October.

Caraboo Projects is a contemporary art organisation based in Bristol, founded in 2018 by a collective of artists & educators. They're committed to developing an inclusive and collaborative platform, bringing together artists, curators and members of the community, for experimentation, and the development of self-organised and cross disciplinary arts in Bristol. Caraboo Projects are based at ‘The Works’, part of Gathering Voices' Creative Outreach & Leadership Programme, which is revitalising disused retail, commercial and industrial buildings, creating a cultural quarter in BS3 in order to provide affordable spaces for developing creatives, including digital and fine arts, performing arts and music.

The Art Licks Weekend was an annual festival that celebrated the activity of artist-led and non-profit project spaces across London; it launched in 2013 and is part of the larger organisation, Art Licks. For its seventh year, the Art Licks Weekend (17–20 October 2019) took on the theme of Interdependence: considering how participating projects work within a network of friendship, exchange and shared dialogue. The festival included exhibitions and events programmed by 63 participating project spaces and collectives across London; working with 290 artists.

Art Licks Weekend continued at PEER – 5 minutes walk from Standpoint – where Common Clay, a Hastings-based ceramics studio, presented Common Ware, showcasing ceramic multiples made by members and associates of the studio alongside a responsive sound piece and free daily artist led drop-in workshops.
