Mark Tanner Sculpture Award Residency Presentation

Standpoint Gallery presented a solo presentation of new work by Madeleine Wheeler, created during a 6-week residency at Standpoint.

Through film, sculpture and performance, Madeleine Wheeler’s practice explores the boundaries between the body and landscape. Questioning what it is for our bodies to take up placement within a landscape and the sensations within the body that relate to this occupancy. States of water and temperature come into play and are explored through placement of colour and material.

The colour blue is a strong feature throughout her practice, which the artist now recognises as a holding space. Representing sky and sea, air and water, blue is both a body in itself and also a place of suspense for our bodies and minds.

The Mark Tanner Sculpture Award (MTSA) residencies facilitate artist development and enable the production of new work in a supportive environment, encouraging artistic exchange and collective working. The 6-week residency takes place at Standpoint and concludes with a weekend public presentation.

Saturday 19 October, 12-4pm
During the Art Licks Weekend 2019, Wheeler opened her studio to host fabric based drop-in workshops exploring the connections between the body and landscape.

Madeleine Wheeler graduated from MA Fine Art, The Slade School of Fine Art in 2019 and BA Fine Art, First Class Honours, Norwich University of the Arts 2013 – 2016. Awards and residencies include Dolbey Travel Scholarship 2019, Slade Print Fair Scholarship 2018, NUA Vice Chancellors Commendation 2016, Caravanserai Residency, Artworks Cambridge, 2018 and Shortlisted for High House Graduate Residency, 2016.
